Israel armed his regime and gave him a computer system for tracking dissidents for elimination, and helped him design his "model villages" where Mayans were enslaved. Meanwhile, they were helping the Contras, who were based in, guess where, Honduras. In short, Israel backed the Salvadoran military, the Honduran military regime, the Guatemalan dictatorships and the Contras, and had been allied with Anastasio Somoza Debayle in Nicaragua before then... These Central American leftists are very well aware that Israel has opposed them with arms, dirty tricks and commandos in the past... what annoys me here is the lack of this background offered in articles on this subject now.
