Israeli Terrorism Against America?? INCONCEIVABLE.

What? What?? Whaaaaat?!?!?!

No, this can’t be. According to an article appearing in one of Israel’s biggest mainstream news outlets–Haaretz–Israeli Military Intelligence is AT THIS VERY MOMENT trying to “figure out” what went wrong in 1954 with something known as the “Lavon Affair”, described by the news outlet as a “sabotage operation” by Israel in “bombing theaters, post offices and U.S. and British institutions, and making it seem as though Egypt was behind the bombings”.

Ohhhh, this simply can’t be, or as the character Vizzini infamously said over and over again in that adorable movie the Princess Bride– “INCONCEIVABLE”. Israel–the apple of God’s eye–deliberately bomb American buildings with the intention of blaming it on her Arab enemies in order to achieve a desired political outcome? Deliberately put innocent civilian life in jeopardy with an overt act of state terrorism?

She would NEVER do something like this, and especially not to her bestest buddy in da whole-wide woyld, America. After all, the Jews are God’s chosen people, and something like this would be a sin and they–the Jewish people–don’t sin.

In a word–INCONCEIVABLE.

The article in question HAD to have been written by an Islamo-fascist. Yes, his name may be “Amos Harel,” but underneath, where it counts, no doubt he is Abdullah Hadid. There simply can be no truth to this story. It is simply INCONCEIVABLE.

No, what must have happened here in this “Lavon Affair” thing is a case of “mistaken identity”, just like when the Jewish state attacked an American ship the USS Liberty–for 2 hours resulting in 34 Americans being killed. She says she thought the 600 ft long ship with huge antennae dishes was actually an Egyptian horse ferry ¼ the size.

And “mistaken identity” is the only viable explanation here. The Jewish spies involved in this didn‘t know they were in Egypt, didn‘t know they were carrying bombs and didn’t know they were sent to blow up American buildings that would result in dead Americans. Israel would never do something like this to her bestest buddy in da whole-wide woyld, America. After all, the Jews are God’s chosen people, and something like this would be a sin and they–the Jews–don’t sin and so her doing something like this is simply INCONCEIVABLE.

Or like the 1983 US Marine baracks bombings in Beirut that resulted in 241 young Americans being killed as they slept. Ex-Mossad officer Victor Ostrovsy alleges in his book “By Way Of Deception” that Israel knew all about it beforehand and refused to warn the Americans, saying that the general attitude at Mossad was that the Americans were getting what they deserved. He must be an Islamo-fascist as well, because Israel knowing about what was to take place to her bestest buddy in the whole wide woyld and then not letting them know would be a betrayal and Jews betraying people is simply INCONCEIVABLE.

Same with Jonathon Pollard and the 1 million highly-classified documents he stole and then sold to Israel who in turn gave them to the Soviet Union, America’s sworn enemy at that time. It was a case of “mistaken identity”–Pollard didn’t know they were classified and Israel didn’t know she was selling them to America’s enemies and the 1,400 American intelligence assets killed as a result is all an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory because for Israel to betray her bestest buddy in da whole wide woyld is simply INCONCEIVABLE.

And 9/11–all those Mossad agents arrested, some seen cheering at the destruction of the towers and others caught driving vans laden with explosives as they headed towards the George Washington bridge…This all HAD to be a case of “mistaken identity”. They didn’t know it was America, didn’t know they were cheering and didn’t know the van they were driving was loaded with tons of C-4, because for Israel to do something like this, an act of terrorism against America that would then be blamed on her Arab enemies (just like in the Lavon Affair) is simply INCONCEIVABLE…

And all the other things as well–Monica Lewinsky being used by Israel to blackmail President Clinton. The Oklahoma City bombings originally done to blame Iraq. The anthrax letters. AIPAC spying on America. The organ harvesting rabbis, Bernie Madoff, and all the rest. What we see is simply an illusion, because the Jews being up to their eyeballs in something as nefarious as this is not only impossible, but indeed INCONCEIVABLE…

…or at least, that’s how it will all be described form virtually every pulpit in virtually every Christian church in America in the coming days and weeks, provided of course it even gets mentioned at all.

The Afghan minister of counter narcotics says foreign troops are earning money from drug production in Afghanistan.

General Khodaidad Khodaidad said the majority of drugs are stockpiled in two provinces controlled by troops from the US, the UK, and Canada, IRNA reported on Saturday.

He went on to say that NATO forces are taxing the production of opium in the regions under their control.

Afghanistan is the world’s biggest supplier of opium.

Drug production in the Central Asian country has increased dramatically since the US-led invasion eight years ago.

A recent report by the United Nations states that Afghan opium is having a devastating impact on the world, killing thousands in consumer countries.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Ahmad Wali Karzai, a brother of the Afghan president, is involved in the opium trade, meets with Taliban leaders, and is also a CIA operative.

The opium trade is the major source of Taliban financing.

Report Suggests Pakistani Envoy in Washington Has Issued 360 Visas to Americans in One Month Without Consulting Islamabad!!!

Blackwater USA is looking for mercenaries fluent in Urdu, Pakistan’s national language, and Punjabi, the language spoken by natives of Pakistan’s largest populated province. The US military already deploys officers and commando units manned by people fluent in Pashto, spoken in most of western Pakistan and southern Afghanistan. Keeping in view the denials of the US embassy in Islamabad and the expanding American presence on Pakistani soil, these recruitments are obviously not meant for running call centers. Since Washington has unilaterally decided that Pakistan is now a ‘war theater’ after Iraq and Afghanistan, it is only natural that American terrorism will also be unleashed in Pakistan. Blackwater is in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Blackwater USA has concealed its Web presence. If you type www.BlackwaterUSA.com , you will be redirected to the website of an organization called U.S. Training Center , which offers military and personal security courses. The website does not overtly say or indicate it is linked to Blackwater, but on Sept. 12 a media release was posted on the homepage defending Blackwater against accusations the private ‘army’ overbilled the US government for work in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.

The bigger news, however, is that ‘Blackwater USA’ is hiring in Pakistan. While BlackwaterUSA.com does not exist on the Web any longer, I 3an employment form on a secured page of the private security firm’s website that clearly indicates the private mercenary army is hiring Urdu- and Punjabi-speaking agents. This would complement the existing Pashto-speaking agents that both Blackwater private mercenary army and its employer, the US military, have on the ground in Afghanistan and – as reports increasingly indicate – in Pakistan.

The snapshots shown here indicate that hiring continues as we speak for agents and for people with military training who can speak Urdu, Pakistan’s national language, and Punjabi, spoken by the natives of Pakistan’s largest populated province.

Obviously, agents with proficiency in the two languages will be operating in and around Pakistan since there is little utility for such agents anywhere else in the world.

This is the latest in a pile of circumstantial evidence that supports the growing concerns within the Pakistani public opinion that private US security firms are setting up shop in Pakistan, bringing to the country the same mayhem that has engulfed Iraq and Afghanistan, possibly with the permission of influential people in the Pakistani government.

A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan today requesting that the government of Pakistan be ordered to explain why the US embassy in Islamabad is building a fortified embassy the size of an international airport, spread over 52 to 54 acres. The petitioner, who is a private Pakistani citizen, has accused the United States of constructing a military base in the heart of the Pakistani capital in the guise of an embassy.

On Aug. 5, Ahmed Quraishi broke the news of how a Washington-incorporated private company that calls itself an NGO and executes contractual humanitarian work for the US government in conflict zones is suspected of acting as cover for Blackwater in Peshawar.

On Jul. 27, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur [DPA] reported that residents of an upscale suburb in Peshawar have formally complained to the Pakistani government that armed private Americans were spreading fear in the area.

We also received a statement issued by Mr. Richard Snelsire, the spokesman for the US embassy in Islamabad, denying these reports:

Since 2002, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed more than $3.4 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to the people of Pakistan in relief, health, education, and economic development programs.

Creative Associates is one of many organizations USAID engages to deliver this assistance, which also includes the Government of Pakistan, local non-governmental, and international humanitarian institutions. This organization has no link to any international security firm, nor is it affiliated in any way with an intelligence service.

Recent allegations against USAID partners such as Creative Associates are false, and place individuals delivering humanitarian and development assistance to the people of Pakistan at risk.

Despite these denials, the Pakistani government and the US embassy are unable to explain several incidents in Peshawar and Islamabad over the past few weeks that involved privately armed American citizens, especially accounts by private citizens confirming they have seen and interacted with these foreign agents in public places. In at least three incidents, these privately armed Americans were released by police authorities under pressure from the government despite involvement in altercations with local Pakistanis. In one case, an armed US citizen physically assaulted a Pakistani police officer and uttered obscenities against the host country.

The alarming part of this story is that the embassy of Pakistan in Washington is reported to have issued several hundred entry permits and visas to individuals without seeking clearance from the country’s security departments. In one recent report, it is reported that the Pakistani ambassador issued 360 visas to US citizens in one month, sometime this year, from the ambassador’s discretionary quota of visas and again without clearance from Pakistani security departments.

Who are these Americans who are arriving in Pakistan in the tens and hundreds at a time when the US embassy in Islamabad follows a strange practice where a staffer personally calls any US citizen in the United States in order to warn them about coming to Pakistan for personal reasons or pleasure, apparently because of the security situation?

As demonstrations go, it was more of a lighthearted affair than a threat to the nation.

About 600 climate change campaigners had gathered outside the Drax power station in North Yorkshire. They had chosen to demonstrate there because the huge plant is the UK’s biggest emitter of carbon. The protesters were mainly families with young children, accompanied by clowns, cyclists, baton twirlers and, according to some reports, a giant ostrich puppet.

It was not completely without incident. Two protesters climbed a lighting pylon at the edge of the site and four others broke through the fence. About 30 others were arrested for public order offences.

Under the heading of “not much a fight, more like a festival“, the Guardian reported that the predicted battle between the police and activists wanting to close the plant down had not materialised.

It was the type of demonstration which has been going on for decades in Britain. But the police appear to have had another, completely different view of the 2006 protest.

After the demonstration, the first in what has become an annual gathering known as Climate Camp, North Yorkshire police conducted a review along with government officials. Internal papers obtained by the Guardian show they called it “the first time domestic extremism took place against national infrastructure in the county”.

The term “domestic extremism” is now common currency within the police. It is a phrase which shapes how forces seek to control demonstrations. It has led to the personal details and photographs of a substantial number of protesters being stored on secret police databases around the country. There is no official or legal definition of the term. Instead, the police have made a vague stab at what they think it means. Senior officers describe domestic extremists as individuals or groups “that carry out criminal acts of direct action in furtherance of a campaign. These people and activities usually seek to prevent something from happening or to change legislation or domestic policy, but attempt to do so outside of the normal democratic process.” They say they are mostly associated with single issues and suggest the majority of protesters are never considered extremists.

Police insist they are just monitoring the minority who could damage property or commit aggravated trespass, causing significant disruption to lawful businesses. Activists respond by claiming this is an excuse that gives police the licence to carry out widespread surveillance of whole organisations that are a legitimate part of the democratic process.

They also warn that the categorisation carries echoes of the cold war, when the security services monitored constitutional campaigns such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anti-Apartheid Movement because alleged subversives or communists were said to be active within them, although they said the organisations themselves were not subversive.

The domestic extremist term was coined by police involved in tackling criminals involved in animal rights groups sometime between 2001 and 2004. Many of these activists were prepared to resort to violence to promote their aims, most notoriously digging up a grandmother’s grave.

The police were successful in jailing many of the animal rights campaigners who were committing crimes. However, there are fears the police’s domestic extremism apparatus, which evolved to counter sometimes violent criminals, is now looking for new targets to justify both its budgets and its existence.

There are three little-known organisations at the heart of this apparatus. They work in tandem under the direction of Anton Setchell, who is national co-ordinator for domestic extremism for the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).

The main branch is the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU), essentially a giant database of protest groups and protesters in the country.

Housed at a secret location in London, its purpose is “to gather, assess, analyse and disseminate intelligence and information relating to criminal activities in the United Kingdom where there is a threat of crime or to public order which arises from domestic extremism or protest activity”.

Police in England and Wales collect intelligence on individuals and then feed it to the NPOIU which, Setchell said, “can read across” all the forces’ intelligence and deliver back to them “coherent” assessments.

Setchell said the “fair proportion” of the intelligence comes from Special Branch officers and police who monitor and photograph demonstrations.

Sensitive information from informants in protest groups and covert intercepts are handled by a section of the NPOIU called the Confidential Intelligence Unit.

The NPOIU database consists of entries indexed by descriptions of people, nicknames or pseudonyms.

Originally it was confined to animal rights groups, but was expanded in 1999 to “include all forms of domestic extremism, criminality and public disorder associated with cause-led groups”. It contains some information supplied by companies that hire private investigators to spy on protesters, sometimes by infiltration.

Setchell argued that there were robust safeguards to protect the human rights of individuals on the database. He said it was possible that protesters with no criminal record were on the databases, but police would have to give a justified reason.

“Just because you have no criminal record does not mean that you are not of interest to the police,” he said. “Everyone who has got a criminal record did not have one once.”

The second part of Acpo’s triumvirate, the National Extremism Tactical Co-ordination Unit (Netcu), helps police forces, companies, universities and other bodies that are on the receiving end of protest campaigns.

Netcu’s job is to give “security advice, risk assessments and information that can minimise disruption and keep their employees safe”. Its head, Superintendent Steve Pearl, says his 16-strong unit works with police forces across the country, keeps detailed files on protest groups, rather than individuals, and liaises with thousands of companies in aviation, energy, research, farming and retail.

Netcu was set up in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire in 2004 by the Home Office which, Pearl said, was “getting really pressurised by big business – pharmaceuticals in particular, and the banks – that they were not able to go about their lawful business because of the extreme criminal behaviour of some people within the animal rights movement.”

Pearl denied the unit was engaged in mission creep but admitted that environmental protesters had now been brought “more on their radar” as they had been “shutting down airports, and shutting down coal-fired power stations, more recently stopping coal trains, hijacking coal trains and ships in the river Medway.”

The third leg of the trio, the National Domestic Extremism Team, was set up in 2005 and consists of detectives who help police forces around the UK.

Initially, the team focused on animal rights activists, but has fanned out to look at any crimes “linked to single issue-type causes and campaigns”, Setchell said.

The team draws on intelligence from the NPOIU database and, the Guardian has learned, is located on the seventh floor of 10 Victoria Street in central London, a building previously occupied by the Department of Trade and Industry.

A former Central Intelligence Agency officer has confirmed US’ relations with the terrorist group Jundullah, despite the CIA knowing that the group has close links with the al-Qaeda.

“American intelligence has also had contact with Jundullah. But that contact, as Iran almost certainly knows, was confined to intelligence-gathering on the country,” Robert Baer, a former Middle East CIA field officer wrote on the Time.com, IRNA reported early on Saturday.

However, he noted that the US-Jundullah relationship “was never formalized, and contact was sporadic.”

The news comes amid US denial of any involvement in a recent terrorist attack in Sistan-Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran, which Jundullah claimed responsibility for.

“I’ve been told that the Bush Administration at one point considered Jundullah as a piece in a covert-action campaign against Iran, but the idea was quickly dropped because Jundullah was judged uncontrollable and too close to al-Qaeda. There was no way to be certain that Jundullah would not throw the bombs we paid for back at us,” said the former CIA agent who is a columnist in the weekly, and very probably an advisor in the Middle East.

Baer also noted that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has had relations with the Jundullah leader, Abdolmalek Rigi.

“Pakistani intelligence has indeed had contact with Jundullah over the years, but there’s no good evidence that Pakistan created Jundullah from scratch. And there’s certainly no evidence that Pakistan ordered the attack,” Baer said in reference to the terrorist attack that took place in Iran on Sunday, October 18, which killed 42 people including the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commanders.

“In fact, Pakistani intelligence over the past few years has been arresting Jundullah members and turning them over to Iran,” he claimed.

This is while earlier on Friday, Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi vowed to do everything in his power to hunt down the Jundullah terrorists and bring them to justice.

“This very incident unveiled the true nature of those who call themselves the pioneer in ‘war on terrorism’,” he said in reference to the United States.

A number of leading newspapers in the West, such as The Sunday Telegraph, have also declared Jundullah to be a CIA brainchild engineered to achieve the longstanding US goal of “regime change in Iran.”

Iran’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Mohammad Najjar, is currently in Islamabad to ask Pakistani officials to hand over Abdolmalek Rigi and assist Iran on cracking down on his terrorist group.

Insurgents in Afghanistan are using heroin as a tactical weapon against US forces, hoping to emulate the drug problems that plagued US troops in Vietnam and Soviet troops in Afghanistan in the 1980s, says a new investigative report.

In a report at the Daily Beast, author Gerald Posner cites “an internal US intelligence report” that “concluded [insurgents] are targeting American troops in an effort to undermine their effectiveness, while raising cash to pay for new recruits and weaponry.”

The report brings up inevitable comparisons to the Vietnam War of the 1960s and 1970s and the Soviet war in Afghanistan that ended two decades ago. It also raises the possibility that the conflict in Afghanistan will spill over into the streets of America as returning troops bring their addictions home with them.

Posner told MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan on Tuesday that drug addiction played a major role in the military failure of those two wars.

“In Vietnam we ended up with a nearly 20 percent addiction rate to China White,” Posner said. (A 1971 report on drug addiction among US soldiers in Vietnam pegged the number closer to 15 percent.)

“Soviet soldiers came back from Afghanistan with addictions,” Posner continued, noting that Russia is now the world’s largest per-capita user of heroin “as a result of those returning Soviet fighters.”

Posner said the Army and the Veterans Administration are “preparing in their hospitals for what might be a deluge” of addicted soldiers coming home from Afghanistan.

“Today’s Taliban are yesterday’s mujaheddin, who fought the Soviets,” Posner said on MSNBC’s Morning Meeting. “They understand that this is an additional weapon.”

The Daily Beast article states:

This heroin bomb then does collateral damage back home. The returning soldiers brought home a heroin problem to Russian cities that grew exponentially during the past two decades. This past March, Russia’s anti-narcotics bureau announced that the country had become the planet’s “No. 1 heroin consumer.”

Today’s Taliban-fighting Americans were yesterday’s mujahideen-fighting Soviets. They saw how heroin helped disable a foreign fighting force more than 20 years ago. And that lesson isn’t lost on them.

Former CIA special agent Jack Rice, who also appeared on MSNBC with Posner, said the fact that insurgents are taking military salaries from soldiers and using that money to fight the United States clearly illustrates the dilemma President Barack Obama faces as he mulls granting a request from top soldiers in Afghanistan to add ground troops to the US mission there.

“Think of this as your biggest problem: We have the Taliban, which are very good administrators — they’re just drug dealers — on one side, versus the Afghan government, which are horrible administrators, and in many ways also drug dealers,” Rice said. “That’s where President Obama is right now, dead center of that point.”

Rice described the situation as a “disaster.”

Posner also said on Morning Meeting that insurgents have developed the ability to produce smokeable heroin in their labs, making it easier for the drug to spread through society.

Ratigan noted that 90 percent of the world’s heroin is produced in Afghanistan.

Posner is probably best known for his 1993 book Case Closed, which argued that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman who shot President John F. Kennedy. The book proved a popular counterpoint at the time to Oliver Stone’s movie JFK, which argued in favor of a broad conspiracy.

But the book has been severely criticized by many JFK assassination researchers, including some who agree that Oswald acted alone. Gary Mack, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, described Case Closed as a “blatantly biased attempt to prove the unprovable.”

French police have arrested an engineer who worked at Cern, Europe’s Switzerland-based nuclear research organisation, on suspicion that he had links to al-Qaida in Algeria.

One of two French-Algerian brothers, aged 25 and 32, arrested yesterday in Vienne, south-east France, was an engineer at the nuclear research centre on the French-Swiss border just outside Geneva, it emerged today.

The men were arrested on suspicion of being in close contact with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), also known as al-Qaida’s north African wing.

Le Figaro reported that the older brother who worked at Cern, famous for its particle collider that aims to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang, had been in contact with AQIM and had suggested French targets for attacks.

A judicial source confirmed that one of the brothers had been in contact with people close to the organisation but said there was no indication of a clearly established plot at this stage.

Cern issued a statement saying the man was a physicist who had worked at the centre since 2003, specialising in physics data analysis.

The organisation said he had “never been in contact with any element that could be used for terrorist ends” and no research at Cern was used for military applications. The physicist was not employed by Cern but was a contractor with another institute.

The European laboratory which specialises in high-energy particle physics is famous for what has been dubbed the world’s biggest science experiment, the Large Hadron Collider which was intended to recreate the conditions of the origin of the universe but hit difficulties days after being started up.

AQIM, al-Qaida’s north African wing, has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at the French embassy in Mauritania, that wounded three people in August.

DENVER – A store clerk’s curiosity about why Najibullah Zazi was buying large quantities of beauty supply products indicated that something about the transaction wasn’t quite right — and it’s an example of the kind of citizen vigilance that can combat terror, a police commander said Saturday.

Los Angeles police Cmdr. Joan McNamara cited this summer’s incident as police chiefs meeting in Denver adopted a model for a nationwide community watch program that teaches people what behavior is truly suspicious and encourages them to report it to police.

Federal authorities allege Zazi, 24, tried to make a homemade explosive using ingredients from beauty supplies purchased at Denver-area stores. He has been jailed in New York on charges of conspiracy to detonate a weapon of mass destruction in a plot that may have targeted New York City. Zazi has denied the charges.

Zazi reportedly told an inquisitive clerk he needed a large amount of cosmetic chemicals because he had “lots of girlfriends.” While his purchases weren’t reported to authorities because suppliers often buy large quantities, the police chiefs hope a coordinated publicity effort will make people think differently about such encounters.

Los Angeles police Chief William Bratton, who developed the iWatch program with McNamara, called it the 21st century version of Neighborhood Watch.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association, headed by Bratton and composed of the chiefs of the 63 largest police departments in the U.S. and Canada, endorsed iWatch at the group’s conference Saturday.

iWatch would have provided an easy way for that Colorado store clerk and others to report suspicious activity so police could launch investigations earlier, McNamara said.

“That clerk had a gut instinct that something wasn’t right,” she said.

Using brochures, public service announcements and meetings with community groups, iWatch is designed to deliver concrete advice on how the public can follow the oft-repeated post-Sept. 11 recommendation, “If you see something, say something.”

Program materials list nine types of suspicious behavior that should compel people to call police, and 12 kinds of places to look for it. Among the indicators:

_If you smell chemicals or other fumes.

_If you see someone wearing clothes that are too big and too heavy for the season.

_If you see strangers asking about building security.

_If you see someone purchasing supplies or equipment that could be used to make bombs.

The important places to watch include government buildings, mass gatherings, schools and public transportation.

The program also is designed to ease reporting by providing a toll-free number and Web page the public can use to alert authorities. Los Angeles put up its Web site this weekend.

“It’s really just commonsense types of things,” Bratton said, adding that his department is providing technical assistance to other agencies that want to adopt the program.

But American Civil Liberties Union policy counsel Mike German, a former FBI agent who worked on terrorism cases, said the indicators are all relatively common behaviors. He suspects people will fall back on personal biases and stereotypes of what a terrorist looks like when deciding to report someone to the police.

“That just plays into the negative elements of society and doesn’t really help the situation,” German said.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, the Bush administration proposed enlisting postal carriers, gas and electric company workers, telephone repairmen and other workers with access to private homes in a program to report suspicious behavior to the FBI. Privacy advocates condemned this as too intrusive, and the plan was dropped.

Bratton and McNamara said privacy and civil liberties protections are built into this program.

“We’re not asking people to spy on their neighbors,” McNamara said.

If someone reports something based on race or ethnicity, the police will not accept the report, and someone will explain to the caller why that is not an indicator of suspicious behavior, McNamara said.

The iWatch program isn’t the first to list possible indicators of suspicious behavior. Some cities, like Miami, have offered a public list of seven signs of possible terrorism. Federal agencies also have put out various lists.

Other efforts encourage the public and law enforcement to report such signs through dozens of state-run “fusion centers” across the country. One such center, the Colorado Information Analysis Center, has a form on its Web site to report suspicious activity.

Bratton hopes the iWatch program becomes as successful and as well known as the Smokey Bear campaign to prevent wildfires.

“There he is with his Smokey the Bear hat, similarly here, we hope that this program, even though it’s in its birthing stages right now, in a few years will become that well known to the American public.”

The Departments of Defense (DoD) and Homeland Security (DHS) today announced an initiative to grant select state and major urban area fusion center personnel access to classified terrorism-related information residing in DoD’s classified network.

Under this initiative, select fusion center personnel with a federal security clearance will be able to access specific terrorism-related information resident on the DoD Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet)—a secure network used to send classified data. This classified data will be accessed via DHS’ Homeland Security Data Network (HSDN). DHS will be responsible for ensuring that proper security procedures are followed.

“With this action, DoD continues its work in supporting states and localities who are leading our efforts to secure the nation from domestic terrorism attacks, said Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs Paul N. Stockton. “We look forward to exploring other opportunities where DoD can help our state and local partners effectively defeat terrorism.”

“This initiative reflects the federal government’s strong commitment to improve information sharing with our state, local, and tribal partners,” said DHS Acting Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis Bart R. Johnson. “Fusion centers are a critical part of our national security enterprise, and this new tool enables federal agencies to share information with these partners while utilizing our advanced technical capabilities for secure information sharing.”

This joint initiative will promote collaboration between DHS, DoD and other federal departments and agencies, enabling the trusted and secure exchange of terrorism-related information in order to detect, deter, prevent and respond to homeland security threats.

State and major urban area fusion centers provide critical links for information sharing between and across all levels of government, and help fulfill key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. This initiative will serve as a valuable resource to enhance situational awaeness and support more timely and complete analysis of national security threats.

Increasing the breadth of law enforcement that have access to terrorism-related data will further improve the ability of fusion centers to prevent, detect, deter, and respond to terrorist attacks, and advance the combined missions of DHS and DoD to protect the nation’s security.

DHS and DoD remain committed to protecting privacy and civil liberties as well as data and networks in an increasingly vulnerable cyber environment.

A local truck driving school became the first on the West Coast to be trained for a new federal anti-terrorism program, the school’s owner and the instructor said.

Robert Hertan, an instructor from Maryland-based Total Security Services International, Inc., led the three-hour class at Vallejo’s Falcon Truck School recently. He said the federal Transportation Security Administration hired his firm to train transportation professionals for the “First Observer” program.

“This is a Department of Homeland Security program, funded by FEMA and administered by the TSA,” Hertan said.

The heart of the training is to use truckers to keep an eye out for — and report — suspicious behavior that could be part of a terrorist operation or some other attack like that on the state capitol eight years ago.

Timing and convenience combined to make Falcon the first school to get this training, but it’s spreading nationwide, Hertan said. Some trucking and school bus firms have been trained, and though specific results are unavailable, it’s working, he said.

“We wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t providing some value,” Hertan said.

“The TSA clearly recognizes the vital role America’s critical infrastructure plays in maintaining and preserving our American way of life and has made protecting that infrastructure a top priority,” according to the program’s literature.

“First Observer engages surface transportation professionals — truck drivers, school bus operators,
mass transit workers, port workers and others — in maintaining the safety and security of America’s bridges, tunnels and roads.”

The average truck spends 100,000 miles on the highway a year — 10 times more than an average car, Falcon instructor Mike Meagher said. So recruiting truckers as extra eyes and ears on the highway makes sense, he said.

Falcon owner Tim Seymour, a former Fairfield resident now living in Palm Springs, summed it up.

“The idea is to train truckers to be able to identify suspicious activity, to assess what they observe and report it,” he said.

Hertan told the Falcon instructors that a First Observer-type program might have made a difference in the 2004 Madrid commuter train bombings, Seymour said.

“Someone actually saw someone leave a backpack on a train, but no one reported it, and we all know what happened there,” he said.

(More than 191 people were killed and 1,800 others injured in Madrid on March 11, 2004, when terrorists set off a coordinated series of bombs on commuter trains.)

Transportation professionals are given a special phone number to report suspicious activity, said Seymour, whose parents founded Falcon in 1982. Seymour said he and his wife Suzanne took over the operation in 2002.

“We were told not to try confronting anyone. Just if you see something a little bit off, call,” he said.

Calls go to a special center, where trained operators assess it and route it to the appropriate authorities, Hertan said.

Hertan told the Falcon instructors there is no such thing as a stupid call, the men said.

An example of something a trucker would recognize as “a little off,” that the average motorist might not, would be the truck that in January, 2001, was intentionally driven into the state capitol in Sacramento, Falcon instructor Robert Richardson said.

“That truck was too long, too big to be there, it was illegal to be there,” said Richardson, a former CHP officer now living in Red Bluff. “If I’d seen it, I would have known there was something wrong, and I would have called 911.”

Certain graffiti can be a terrorist message, the men were told. People hanging around where they don’t seem to belong, a gas tanker parked on the Bay Bridge or downtown — anything a trucker might recognize as unusual or out of place, should prompt a call, the truckers learned.

“Even if one call doesn’t amount to anything, if they put together enough seemingly random information, they could discover evidence of a terror cell operating,” said Meagher, a Cordelia resident. “I also tell my students to watch out for their own equipment, to be observant. You can unwittingly become the carrier of explosives that can do damage.”

Among the most shocking things the men said they learned was “what five pounds of C-4 can do to a Greyhound bus,” Richardson said. “Disintegrates it completely. They showed that on a video.”

Falcon’s instructors said they never expected to be on the front lines of the nation’s war on terror. “But truckers tend to be pretty patriotic, always have been,” Meagher said. “We’re more than willing to do this. The threat exists and we all have to pay attention if we want to keep our nation safe.”

First Observers is an extension of “Highway Watchers,” a similar program launched shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, he said.

Seymour said he will be developing a First Observer-based curriculum element over the next several weeks, and include it in Falcon students’ regular coursework starting in October.

September 1, 2009 An Iraqi doctor has told Sky News the number of babies born with deformities in the heavily-bombed area of Fallujah is still on the increase. Fifteen months ago a Sky News investigation revealed growing numbers of children being born with defects in Fallujah. Concerns were that the rise in deformities may have been linked to the use of chemical weapons by US forces. We recently returned to find out the current situation and what has happened to some of the children we featured. In May last year we told the story of a three-year-old girl called Fatima Ahmed who was born with two heads. When we filmed her she seemed like a listless bundle – she lay there barely able to breathe and unable to move. Even now and having seen the pictures many times since I still feel shocked and saddened when I look at her. But the prognosis for Fatima never looked good and, as feared, she never made it to her fourth birthday. Her mother Shukriya told us about the night her daughter died. Wiping away her tears, Shukriya said she had put her daughter to bed as normal one night but woke with the dreadful sense that something was wrong. She told us she felt it was her daughter’s moment to die, but of course that does not make the pain any easier. Fatima’s father had taken his little girl’s hand but it was cold. “She is gone,” he had said to his distraught wife. Another girl we met last year was Tiba Aftan who was born with a huge growth across her face. Now she is a toddler her future is looking brighter having gone to neighbouring Jordan to have it removed. The growth had covered half of Tiba’s forehead and was invading one of her eyes – and it was getting bigger as she got older. Although the operation was a success Tiba will need more surgery and the last trip cost her family almost every penny they have. But since our original investigation, we have built up a new dossier of cases of deformed children in Fallujah born in the last eight months. There are a wide range of problems – from abnormalities of the abdomen to facial disfigurements. We have also seen pictures of all kinds of deformed foetuses which have not survived. There is no precise explanation as to what has caused the deformities and there are no figures to compare cases with those a decade or more ago as records were not kept during the time of Saddam Hussein. All of our evidence is anecdotal, but repeatedly people tell us they believe the deformities must be linked to the heavy bombardment of Fallujah – a Sunni insurgent stronghold – by America in 2004. People want an independent investigation into the impact of the kinds of weapons used – including controversial white phosphorus. Yet even since we first started to give a voice to the calls for help from the people of Fallujah things seem to have got worse. Dr Ahmed Uraibi, a specialist paediatrician in Fallujah, told us that the number of deformities he has dealt with has increased in the last year. The people of Fallujah want to know how many more deformed babies there will be before someone sits up and takes notice of them.
