This may be the first partnership between Google and the NSA, but
Google already has a long standing and documented relationship with
the FBI. GMail was established with grants from the Carnivore /
NarusInsight project, extending real-time email surveillance to
include searching of network stored mailboxes (or webmail). Yahoo,
Hotmail and others also received DCS1000 funding which paid for
network storage upgrades; extending their services from 2 megabyte
limits to unlimited email storage, and no 30 day account expiration
periods. Consequently, users of these webmail servers can no longer
terminate their accounts or physically delete their emails from the
server. All messages are stored indefinitely for the life of the
user, which raises obvious privacy concerns. Through the network of
Homeland Security, the NSA and other agencies already have access
to this FBI resource, so Google's NSA partnership is nothing to
'freak out' about.
