The only politician Mel Gibson ever endorsed snubbed him
On March 17th of this year, Congressman Tom McClintock gave a speech on the House floor in which he touted Israel’s ‘rightful sovereignty’ over the West Bank, and bemoaned ‘rockets are now routinely launched against Israeli civilians’ from the Gaza strip. Mel Gibson, on the other hand, is infamous for allegedly telling a Malibu police officer “F*****g Jews… The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world…Are you a Jew?” Hard to imagine that these two would have much in common- but they, in fact, shared a common cause; albeit a short-lived one- a mere 4 years ago.
To my knowledge, actor Mel Gibson has only publicly endorsed one candidate during his Hollywood career: Tom McClintock. It was in 2006, and a little background about McClintock might be helpful….
In 2006, Mel Gibson personally endorsed Tom McClintock for lieutenant governor of California. Gibson wrote a three page letter endorsing Tom, and McClintock’s campaign mailed them out several times. In the letters, Gibson lamented “a government that was founded to protect our fundamental God-given rights is now becoming destructive of those rights”. ..
After Mel Gibson’s DUI arrest and alleged drunken tirade against Jews, McClintock went on KFI’s John and Ken show the week of August 9, 2006 and told the KFI hosts that he met Gibson once in 2004 and spoke to him for about an hour. According to Tom, Gibson told him that he voted for him in the recall. They discussed issues and Gibson later wrote a campain fundraising letter which the McClintock campaign used, quite successfully. McClintock concluded by saying he instructed his staff to be sure to no longer use the Gibson letter. The headlines read ’Republican Candidate Drops Gibson Endorsement‘, and Politician shuns Gibson backing. McClintock’s spokesman at the time said “Tom saw the news and the situation as it was unfolding with Mel Gibson and made a conscious decision to direct people not to use the letter any further. He was disillusioned by the situation with Mr Gibson”.
